It is not only that we are put now where we can be the witness to grace in all its outgoings, but, besides that, we are where flesh might show itself. And your spirit being alive, again you can experience fellowship with God, the joy, the blessing of fellowshipping with God.So, "walk in the Spirit." The idea is that of a man who is so far gone in desire that he has ceased to care what people say or think. To them, no doubt, it appeared as if they were zealous and sincere champions of unity. The apostle urges that all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Where was the harm of taking up what saints of old submitted to? The law and the promise are both from God, but the law's use is only negative and condemnatory. You cannot attack such a servant without attacking his testimony. That they should all strive against sin; and happy would it be for the church if Christians would let all their quarrels be swallowed up of this, even a quarrel against sin--if, instead of biting and devouring one another on account of their different opinions, they would all set themselves against sin in themselves and the places where they live. Bondage is there; and He is a deliverer, but it is to God's glory, and for His own service in the liberty of grace. I mean, if you're walking in love, what rules can you lay down? So all of these things fall under the category of works of the flesh, but the "fruit of the Spirit," fruit is singular. If I am a mere man, a sinner, the end of that is (for responsibility is not like power, destroyed by sin) the eternal judgment of God. Paul was confident the Galatians would resist the one leading them in the wrong direction. "Are ye so foolish? If you want to be a subject in God's kingdom, then you cannot do these things. So "cursed is the man that continues not in the whole law to do that which is written therein" ( Galatians 3:10 ). You are bound to carry it out consistently. And Peter said, "I suggest that we not place a yoke of bondage on them which neither we, nor our fathers were able to bear" ( Acts 15:10 ). For what the law is actually saying to you is that you should love God supremely and love your neighbor as yourself. He simply states, as I have said, that his apostolic character was not only from Jesus, but from God the Father, that raised Him from the dead. His spirit died, and Adam broke fellowship with God. One of the lawyers one day challenged Jesus as to the greatest commandment. If any apostleship would have served for the Gentiles, it ought to have been Paul's then; for Paul was the apostle of the uncircumcision. If understood, it completely cut all the earthly swaddling-clothes of the heavenly church, and of the Christian. If, instead of acting like men and Christians, they would behave themselves more like brute beasts, in tearing and rending one another, they could expect nothing as the consequence of it, but that they would be consumed one of another; and therefore they had the greatest reason not to indulge themselves in such quarrels and animosities. The essence of it is that it does not describe the spirit which desires, nobly or ignobly, to have what someone else has: it describes the spirit which grudges the fact that the other person has these things at all. VIII. Let others talk as they will of the law, no law can censure the real fruits of the Holy Ghost, or those in whom they are found. False doctrine was probably a judgment from heaven upon their ambition, pride, and other offenses. But the liberty is not a liberty to indulge my flesh in anything that I may desire to do after the flesh. These were his lineal posterity. The world of spirits can never be comfortable to those who plunge themselves in the filth of the flesh; nor will the righteous and holy God ever admit such into his favour and presence, unless they be first washed and sanctified, and justified in the name of our Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God,1 Corinthians 6:11. The allusion is to beasts of prey falling upon and devouring one another: for wolves or dogs to worry sheep is not strange; but for sheep to distress one another is unnatural. You see, you don't need any laws. Nothing is so destructive to the peace of man, and to the peace of the soul, as religious disputes; where they prevail, religion in general has little place. Paul was pleading for the real interests of the Jew just as much as of the Gentile; but he presses this most clenching argument that Peter's conduct involved the making Christ Himself the minister of sin; "for if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.". It cannot and ought not to spare sinners. I choose the best facts; for I have no wish to rake up abuses. Now these things are an allegory. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. Who in times past you walked according to the course of this world. Was it possible, then, that any could desire to put the Gentiles under law, when they had been brought out from it themselves by the will of God, the work of Christ, and the witness of the Holy Spirit? (89) , . "For I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all." I said, "That's a lie." and devour one another -- As wild beasts do. I began to think it through and I thought, "Yes, it is a work of the flesh, because usually a person gets into heresy to attract attention to himself." Christendom is built upon this footing. How abortive is man in the things of God! And I'm washed and I'm cleansed and I go on. Christianity refuses to be mingled with anything but itself. "The death of Christ for you isn't sufficient. Even in Christianity how much need there is to remember what the Lord warns us of inLuke 5:1-39; Luke 5:1-39 that no man accustomed to old wine straightway desires new, but says, The old is better. And at the end of each day, I can paste my gold stars on those that I've kept. 13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. When God speaks of the seed numerous as the sand or the stars, He gives them a Jewish character of blessing. galatians devour bite But it is life after death to law, and consequently in another sphere. It is interesting to note the earnestness and strength with which the apostle speaks, now the question had been fairly raised. But he was not thus disobedient to the heavenly vision. I admit that this was all in place and season then for Jerusalem. All right, you know. He mentions another fact, and of the greatest gravity, closing this part of his argument that when Peter subsequently came down into the Gentile quarters, he had been himself affected by the subtle spirit of Judaism, i.e., the chief of the twelve! 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Oligarchy means government by the few and can be justified by arguing that only the few are fit to govern. Undoubtedly such is the assurance of God's word to His children; and thus Galatians 5:1-26 is in contrast withRomans 7:1-25; Romans 7:1-25.

Thus the apostle had to link together the gospel of grace with his own apostolic dignity; and we do well to take heed to this remarkable fact. I was wrong. #1 It is for freedom By freedom, this verse means that we can serve others in the name of the Lord and reap the reward of joy that comes from it (Galatians 5:13-15). First, we must guard it, especially from those who would pressure us to follow the law. It's faith in Jesus Christ that saves. "Yet undergirding all of Pauls admonitions regarding love and service is the reality of life lived by the Spirit, with references to the Spirit being more frequent in Galatians 5:13 to Galatians 6:10 than references to either love or service." This is heavy. The history of the flesh its sad and humbling history is soon over; but the history that faith opens into never closes. There is nothing that requires more the power of grace; for even the truth itself, if severed from grace, ceases to be the truth. But in truth the Lord "gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Second, it means that we are free to follow the Spirit and produce good works that last forever because we have faith in God and obey Gods word (Galatians 5:16-26).

For the law was used with killing power; and, slain as it were in my conscience, I found in that very place Christ Himself by the grace of God, Christ that died for me; and not merely this, but Christ in whom I died. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you who are justified [or seeking to be justified] by the law; ye are fallen from grace ( Galatians 5:4 ). The Bible says, "The natural man cannot understand the things of the Spirit: neither can he know them, they are spiritually discerned" ( 1 Corinthians 2:14 ). Then we come to the closing chapter (Galatians 6:1-18); and here we find the Spirit of God calling for tenderness in dealing with those who are overtaken in a fault. My business is to act consistently with the new place in which grace has put me. It was Paul's belief and experience that the Christian died with Christ and rose again to a life, new and clean, in which the evil things of the old self were gone and the lovely things of the Spirit had come to fruition. Thus it appears that the Galatians as well as the Corinthians had been similarly affected. Well, they thought that they had me convinced to their way of thinking. They danced and laughed and sang his praises. Generally speaking the word is not used of patience in regard to things or events but in regard to people. The apostle takes notice of the latter here, because he is speaking of their behaviour towards one another; and, when he makes use of this as an argument to persuade them to mutual love, he intimates both that this would be a good evidence of their sincerity in religion and also the most likely means of rooting out those dissensions and divisions that were among them. "O foolish Galatians," he now breaks out in an impassioned appeal to them, "who hath bewitched you [that ye should not obey the truth should here vanish], before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you?" 16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Or literally, "I wish they were castrated who trouble you. Those that walk according to this rule would be saints in general. As the principle of grace in us will not suffer us to do all the evil which our corrupt nature would prompt us to, so neither can we do all the good that we would, by reason of the oppositions we meet with from that corrupt and carnal principle. And devour one another - As wild beasts do. How could it be otherwise with one persecuting at the moment that he was arrested, in hot deadly opposition to God's church up to his most unexpected call from heaven? Thus He lived and moved here below. He is afresh making efforts to improve, yet still in bondage and misery.
